Coach Bear Woods delivers a practical approach to developing our Student-Athletes centered on serving their ambition with the resources necessary to work at a championship level. His pursuit includes establishing a culture of servant leadership amongst his coaching staff and student leaders. He's executing a plan that extends his passion for athletic development into the community. It's a plan complemented by our school spirit, a high-energy student section, and is committed to making WHS athletic events interactive and truly entertaining for our Indian Family.
Bear Woods began an elite football career by walking onto the Troy University team as a quarterback. He was undersized, shunned away, and told to go home. His persistence and work ethic ultimately earned him a starting job as a linebacker where he became one of the most prolific Troy University defensive players in program history.
From his start as a collegiate long-shot, Coach Bear persisted to demonstrate in every opportunity that he could play with anyone. Recognizing he was a proven winner, having a rare and unrelenting pursuit and love for the game of football, Coach Bear was given an opportunity to pursue his dream in 2010 by the NFL's Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent.
Following his time with the Falcons, Bear found his stride achieving an 11-year career in the Canadian Football League (CFL) and serving through the years as a Team Captain for both Montreal Alouettes and Toronto Argonauts. During this time he was nominated as an All-Star twice. Highlights of his CFL career include becoming the Montreal Franchise single-season tackle record holder, being named a CFL Eastern Division Defensive POY x2, and winning the Grey Cup with the Toronto Argonauts. Bear retired his professional career in 2021 as a proven leader and one of the most impactful players in Argos history!
Simply said, it's the perfect representation of his approach to the game of football, it's “Controlled Hostility”!
To know Bear Woods, he would tell you his biggest win continues to be an endless support system led by his wife Jennifer guiding his family of six. The Woods family can easily be characterized by their faith and a priority of prayer. In addition to safety, strength, and sportsmanship, during pre-game family huddles, Bear's pursuit compelled him to regularly ask them to pray for
"Relentless, Tenacious Endurance"!
Hired by WHS and Elmore County Schools in 2022, this is Coach Wood's first role leading and coaching AHSAA 6A Athletic Programs.
